CHAPTER EVENTS
A GOLDEN NIGHT OF JAZZ
On the first Saturday in May, the 423 Fund in collaboration with our chapter host its signature event, A GOLDEN NIGHT OF JAZZ at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. It is an awesome night of sophisticated elegance, a unique locale, an interactive fundraising experience and a spectacular jazz concert that makes A Golden Night one of the most exciting and talked about events. It is more than a fundraiser, but a festive and stimulating opportunity to support a great cause. You will enjoy the world-class fine art of the VMFA American Art Gallery and great music. In addition, there are also challenging but fun and amazing scavenger hunts, an indulgently delicious selection of heavy hors d'oeuvres and great fellowship, This event benefits the educational programs for young men and women particularly in the areas of math and science.
ANNUAL COOKOUT HONORING BRO. RANDALL JEFFERSON
During the summer, we have our annual chapter cookout in honor of our late Brother Randall Jefferson at Rockwood Park in Chesterfield. Our chapter cookouts give us a chance for our families and friends to come together, fellowship, enjoy good food and great company and get a few Spades games started. It is also an opportunity to meet new interested candidates and reclaim brothers who are looking to get back in the fold.
BROTHER'S KEEPER WITH BRO. DR. WYATT T. WALKER
Normally, after our Highway Cleanup, our chapter assembles at the Crossings at Ironbridge in Chesterfield and get another opportunity to "chop it up" with Brother Dr. Wyatt T. Walker. Brother Walker was initiated through the Gamma Chapter at Virginia Union University on April 7, 1948. He is always in good spirits and shares with us of his experiences from his Virginia Union University days to being Brother. Dr. Marting Luther King, Jr.'s advisor, the number of times he was arrested, and the many books he published. He is one "heavy" dude and we are happy that he is a member of Rho Iota Lambda Chapter.
HIGHWAY CLEANUP HONORING BRO. REGINALD JOHNSON
Quarterly, our chapter goes out and clean up a portion of the westbound lanes of Ironbridge Road - Route 10. Regardless of the weather conditions, it does not stop us from doing what we have to do. We do this Highway Cleanup in honor of our late Brother Reginald Johnson.
MARCH OF DIMES - MARCH FOR BABIES WALK
Every May, our chapter participates in a 2.5-3 mile walk to help raise money for the March of Dimes/March for Babies. The walk takes place at Innsbrook Northshore Commons in Glen Allen, Virgnia.
READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY
On March 2, our chapter goes to the local elementary schools and ready to the children on Ready Across America Day. The National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. NEA's Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents, caregivers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.
SALVATION ARMY ANGEL TREE
In December, we gathter at Chesterfield Town Center to work the annual Salvation Army Angel Tree event. The Angel Tree is a great vessel to involve the community in a direct way allowing them to become personally involved by sharing with those less fortunate in the community. The Angel Tree provides gifts o new clothing and toys to thousands of children who otherwise might not have anything for Christmas.
UKROP'S MONUMENT AVENUE 10K
In the fridid April temperatures, our chapter volunteers its time filling hundreds of water cups and distributing them to race participants on Mile #5 of the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K Race. This is an annual event chapter brothers participate in as a way of community support and involvement. This brothers in attendance enjoy cheering on race participants as they dash towards the finish line, and offers an ICE COLD "O6" to all Alpha brothers as they reaches for a refreshing cup of water.
